GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition

Why study this course?

Food preparation and nutrition is an exciting and creative course. You will focus on practical skills to develop a thorough understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials. You will learn how to develop meals and recipes for specific user groups.

If you like understanding about the importance of food in our lives then this course is for you.

What topics/skills will I learn?

You will learn about and practice all the skills required to produce healthy meals for specific user groups as well as understand about the relevance of following core topics in food preparation such as:-

  • Food nutrition and health.
  • Food science.
  • Food safety.
  • Food choice.
  • Food provenance.

How will I be assessed?

There will be a written exam of 1 hour 45 minutes which is worth 50% of the marks and two non exam assessments, made up of two tasks.

There are two coursework tasks.

  • Task one is a food investigation of 1500 to 2000 word report where you will investigate the importance of ingredients and the impact it has on food.
  • Task two is a portfolio of a practical assessment both amounting to 50% of the final exam. Students will cook prepare and present a final menu of three dishes within a 3 hour exam.

Where can this course lead to after Key Stage 4?

Students will be able to study Level 3 Food and Nutrition, Level 2 and 3 Hospitality and Catering, Bakery and Patisserie, embark upon apprenticeships or a full time career in catering or food industries.
