Why study this course?

The technical award in materials technology will enable young men and women to develop knowledge and understanding of engineering and scientific principles in an enjoyable and practical way.

Design and Engineering is one of the most exciting and important job sectors and offers a wide variety of careers.  Studying this course will encourage you to generate good ideas, develop practical skills and apply your knowledge in practical and written contexts.


How will I be assessed?

Unit 1: 30%  – Skills Demonstration – Coursework

A range of mini projects designed to show your manufacturing and evaluating skills.


Unit 2: 30% – Extended Making Project – Coursework

Students will undertake an extended making project that showcases the skills they have developed in Unit 1 and the knowledge they have developed through Unit 3.


Unit 3: 40% – Fundamentals of Materials – Exam

Students will be examined on their knowledge of engineering materials, components and principles.  They will be expected to apply their knowledge to engineering contexts and in doing so demonstrate their materials and processes knowledge.

They will be assessed on:

  • materials and their working properties
  • processes and manufacture
  • joining, components, adhesives and finishes
  • product specification
  • commercial practice
  • careers opportunities


Where can this course lead after Key Stage 4?

The joy of this qualification is that it can prepare students for a range of pathways post-GCSE.  Technical, design based and scientific A-Levels,  level 3 qualifications and apprenticeships are all appropriate routes following the course.

à Product Design A-Level

à Architecture

à Apprenticeships in the design, manufacturing and engineering sectors.

à Materials Engineering

à Mechanical or Automotive Engineering


This qualification will teach pupils to creatively solve problems, work accurately with their hands, evaluate their performance and take a range of ideas and apply them in appropriate ways.   It is an ideal foundation for degree level education.
