Why study this course?
All students will study English Literature. Through this course they will:
- Build on their knowledge of Literature developed in their earlier education.
- Continue to build their empathy skills by understanding people’s lives from different times and places.
- Develop their literature skills to read novels, poems and plays for deeper meaning.
- Explore the importance of themes and context in different texts.
- Learn how writers use form, structure and language to create different effects.
- Develop their analytical response to a wide range of texts.
- Be able to explain their personal response to poetry, novels and plays.
Students will study from a wide range of texts, from the canon of English Literature spanning the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
Texts the students will study specifically for their GCSE English Literature examination include these texts, with additional linked literature:
| ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens |
| ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare |
| ‘An Inspector Calls’ by JB Priestley |
| 15 poems from the AQA Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology |
How will I be assessed?
The English Literature course culminates in two exams at the end of Year 11.

Exam 1 – Shakespeare and the 19th Century Novel 1 hour 45 minutes Macbeth A Christmas Carol |
Exam 2 – Modern texts and poetry 2 hours 15 minutes An Inspector Calls Poetry (from the Anthology) Two Unseen poems |
