Physical Education (GCSE)

Why study this course?

GCSE Physical Education is a popular and successful course at Wreake Valley and is a subject where students can enjoy both academic learning and practical sport.

The content of the course has been designed to allow you to study Physical Education in an academic setting, allowing students to critically analyse and evaluate physical performance and apply your experience of practical activities in developing your knowledge and understanding of Physical Education.

The course allows you to explore a range of activities in the role of performer, including both team and individual activities.

What topics/skills will I learn?

Students who choose PE will specialise in:

  • Applied anatomy and physiology
  • Movement analysis
  • Physical training
  • Use of data
  • Sports psychology
  • Socio-cultural influences
  • Health, fitness and well-being
  • Analysis and evaluation of a chosen sport

 How will I be assessed?

For GCSE PE the course assessment consists of:

Written exam:

Paper 1: 30% of GCSE

Paper 2: 30% of GCSE

Practical exam: 40% of GCSE

Where can this course lead to after Key Stage 4?

Many students who study Physical Education choose to study in further education. We currently offer BTEC Sport at  Bradgate Sixth Form and outcomes are very good.

Careers after studying GCSE PE include physiotherapy, health trainer, events manager, teacher, sports development officer and sports scientist. It is also really useful if you want to do part time work alongside studies such as lifeguarding, swim teaching or sports coaching.
